THE COLONIAL ARCHITECTURE OF THE CENTRE
The cornerstone of the architecture of Gitega is not so much the same as the one built nearly a century ago, and the German houses of the same time along the Boulevard du Triomphe, below the Circle. There are only two or three, very beautiful, despite the lack of renovations. Built in stone and brick in the orange prothonotary of Gitega, they have pediments characteristics of the old Rhine cities and roofs of flat tiles, as we do no longer.
Elsewhere, there are still some beautiful vestiges of colonial architectural heritage such as the Circle (formerly «Ryckmans Circle», from the name of a famous colonial governor), with its facades in underlined circles of a blue painting border, and the houses on its rear, in stone coated with windows enhanced by a brick edge.
