NATIONAL MUSEUM OF GITEGA
The museum is part of an architectural complex that gathered during its inauguration (1955) the palace of the mwami, the Royal Court of Justice and the Burundian Parliament of the country (Higher Council of the country). It is now a presidential residence (impossible visit), the Gitega public prosecutor's office and the offices of the provincial administration.
Recently renovated, the museum is one of the only places in the country where one can familiarize itself with the historical and cultural heritage of Burundi, with ethnographic and archaeological collections: articles relating to royalty and traditional religions (the end of the th century), pottery and tools forged discovered during archaeological excavations, musical instruments, lances and traditional costumes, ancient photographs (portraits of the country's chiefs and kings, scenes of rural Burundi…).
The museum was recently renovated and restored in interest. At numerous national events (national day, visit of a personality…), celebrations are organized on the museum's esplanade, and tambourinaires sometimes occur there.
