THE SHALOM HOUSE
Maison Shalom is a non-confessional NGO under Burundian law, whose existence is the energy of Marguerite Barankitse and his relatives, who created it when the war ravaged the region. Following a massacre, «Maggy» collects children left without parents and defends them tooth and nail against threats. In 1994, she persuaded the Diocese of Ruyigi to entrust her with an old dilapidated school to welcome them. The «House of Peace» was born.
Assisted by various international associations, the association is growing. Houses first, then villages are built by Maggy and its children (Ruyigi, Cankuzo, Rutana), "oasis of peace" where each can reconstruct as a family in keeping with its needs (school, agriculture, small services and shops) and grow with others… Thousands of orphans live in these villages where the houses equipped (water and electricity) stay with real siblings. reconstituted.
In total, the actions of Maison Shalom concern more than 20 000 children (collected in the centre, in the half-thousand houses built, or assisted in their families), all ethnic and histories combined. The construction of the Rema Hospital, aid to refugees returning from Tanzania with UNHCR and the construction of schools around Ruyigi are other ongoing projects.
