TRENCH TOWN CULTURE YARD MUSEUM
Visit the museum to learn about the formation and history of Trench Town, and see period photographs of Bob and his family
The Trench Town Culture Yard is a community project. Like other museums dedicated to Bob Marley, TTCY is not overflowing with relics of the late star. This "government yard," a complex of about 20 rooms with a central kitchen and bathroom, following a "U" plan, was built for working-class families in the 1940s and 1950s. It was here that Bob learned to play guitar with Vincent 'Tata' Ford, with whom he co-wrote No Woman No Cry. The Wailers composed their first album "Catch a Fire" here in the 1970s. In the garden you will find the old carcass of Bob's Volkswagen van, his first guitar, and a very simple and touching room where he would have conceived little Ziggy with Rita. The tour includes a lot of information about the formation and history of Trench Town, period photographs of Bob and his family. The lucky ones will meet Stoneman, visionary artist and spiritual leader, for some surprising revelations. He runs the on-site craft store... It is possible to visit the TrenchTown Reading Center which faces the museum. We advise you to take a tour of the surrounding streets accompanied by a guide, to get an idea of life in the ghetto, and of the daily life of families far from the beautiful neighborhoods of Kingston. Accompanied by a local guide, the walk leads to the famous 1rd,2nd and3rd Street, where the biggest stars of Jamaican reggae lived.
