DEVON HOUSE
A splendid residence, Kingston's finest architectural gem, enthroned in the center of a pleasant park with children's playground.
Devon House is arguably Kingston's finest architectural gem. Although expensive to visit, we can't recommend it highly enough. Standing majestically in the center of a vast park, this splendid two-storey mansion harmoniously blends ochre and white tones. It was built in 1881 by George Stiebel, one of the first black Jamaicans to make a fortune from his investments in the Venezuelan gold mines. It was his duty to build his family a home to match the size and scale of his fortune. Purchased by the government in 1967, the house has been restored and furnished in the original style. Porches, verandas, majestic staircases, impressively proportioned reception rooms, coquettish drawing rooms, music room, library, bedrooms and boudoirs furnished with British elegance and warm tropical touches. The rooms are vast and harmonious, capturing the atmosphere of a bygone era. The visit can be combined with a tasting of artisanal ice cream, patty or raw coconut cream, or all at once!
The park is open free of charge to visitors who come to relax with family and friends on the lawns at weekends. A children's playground is available (for a fee).
Devon House I-Scream: the ice creams in this store are reputed to be the best in the country. A small shopping center also offers a diverse choice of restaurants, delicatessens, souvenir stores and craft boutiques.
