IRON BRIDGE
Remarkable metal bridge, the oldest in the New World, located over the Rio Cobre on the outskirts of Spanish Town
It is the oldest metal bridge in the New World. It was designed by Thomas Wilson in 1801 and was built in England by the Walker Ironworks company before being assembled in Jamaica. Although it is still intact, it is now closed to traffic. You will find it above the Rio Cobre, just outside the city. It is characterized by two solid stone bases that made the success of its robustness. A structure of 87 tons of steel over 25 meters long. The drying up of the river is now weakening its foundations.
