TITCHFIELD HILL - FORT GEORGE

A hill standing sentinel between the two bays of Port Antonio, a former residential area with elegant mansions.
Erected as a sentinel between the two bays of Port Antonio, the hill, a former residential area reserved for rich planters, retains a nostalgic charm. The streets climb gently to the top, offering incomparable views of the sea. Only the remains of a few elegant residences are still there to testify to the former splendor of the hill, which today is only a slightly dilapidated working-class neighborhood. Victorian style, festooned galleries and gingerbread decorations... the large wooden buildings with faded colors offer the illusion of a trip to the time of the sugar king... It is pleasant to stroll in the sunset in the almost deserted streets, among children playing and animals lazing under the last rays of the sun. Most of the city's guesthouses and the cheapest accommodations are located on this small cape.
Fort George was built in 1729 to defend the town from potential foreign invasions and to deal with the threat of the Maroons in the area. Fort George is massive, standing on walls 3 meters thick, bristling with 22 cannons. Transformed during the First World War into a training and supply base by the British Navy, it is now a school, Titchfield High School. Of its original construction, only the ammunition building, the defensive walls and a line of cannons remain.
