WATER SQUARE
Antique water tank built in 1798 by the colonists, serving as a traffic circle and marking the center of the town of Falmouth.
The old water cistern built in 1798 by the colonists now serves as a traffic circle... marking the center of the town. In the past, water from the nearby Martha Brae River was stored here and slaves would come early in the morning to fill buckets and tanks to supply the planters' homes. Today, there is nothing left: a modern fountain and its small garden have taken the place of the old cistern, destroyed in the 1950s. It is a pity that these few historical vestiges were not preserved at that time.
