ST. JAMES CHURCH
This church, made of white limestone ashlar, is one of the most beautiful in the country. Don't miss to go and admire it while passing by the center. It was built between 1778 and 1782, when the city lived in the opulence of the trade of its port, the second in Jamaica and one of the most strategic of the British Crown. It stands out with high, narrow and graceful windows, in the middle of a modern and colorful Downtown. Its small garden is bordered by banana trees, while on its green lawn are planted scattered graves of abandoned planters. Its architecture reflects the style of the Anglican church built according to a Greek cross plan, fashionable at that time in England, which was built everywhere in Jamaica. This one has the particularity of having a Venetian window in its choir, a rarity in Jamaica. One can admire its beautiful square bell tower and its clock on the outside. Inside, there is an impressive organ and two notable marble sculptures by John Bacon, an 18th century sculptor. One of them is a monument to Rosa Palmer, who was none other than the owner of Rose Hall Great House. There are also plaques and memorials to important historical figures in Montego Bay. In 1911, beautiful stained glass windows depicting the crucifixion of Jesus were added. Heavy reconstruction work had to be done in 1957 after damage from a terrible earthquake.
