SAFARI SUR LA BLACK RIVER
Go there and contact
the Black River is best known for its population of almost 300 crocodiles, which we come to see by boat, a great excursion we recommend. But why the name "Black River"? Despite its clear waters, this river was once known as the Coyobana, "the ebony river", used to transport to the port tree trunks whose sap was used to obtain indigo dye, which has long been a major export product for the region, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries. The black silt that lines the riverbed gives the water a murky appearance, even though it's crystal-clear.
The Black River Nature Reserve spans 7,200 hectares, mainly covered by swamps and dense vegetation: mangroves, water lilies, ferns, rushes and sugar cane fields. It's home to over a hundred rare bird species: ducks, herons, egrets, cranes, kingfishers and more. As well as butterflies and fish that have chosen this rich ecosystem. You'll also spot the famous "crocodile dentist" heron, who feeds by cleaning the teeth of sleeping crocodiles with their mouths wide open.
Crocodile-watching safari by boat. The easiest way is to book a tour directly with a local agency, such as J. Charles Swaby's, whose guides are excellent. Embark under the metal bridge over the Black River to see the stars of the region: some 300 crocodiles along the river and in the Great Morass. Up to 5 m long, some of them are almost domesticated near the harbour, accustomed to being pawed by the guides who show us their physical characteristics from the boat gate. Very impressive! The tour begins with an open marsh landscape teeming with gigantic crocodiles. Camouflaged in the water on the mangrove-lined banks, they come to the boat at the guide's call. Further on, wilder landscapes await you, up to an impressive mangrove arm with gigantic lianas. On the way back, you'll visit the nursery, with the chance to take a photo with a baby crocodile!
On an organized tour. If you don't have a car, you can take a day tour from Negril that includes all entrance fees, transport and boats, and combines Black River, YS Falls and a visit to the Appleton distillery.
