Housed in the splendid Post Palace, this museum traces the country's history back to prehistoric times. The various sections house rich collections. In the lapidarium, you'll see a replica of Rome's Trajan column, as well as numerous frescoes and statues. The most interesting room is undoubtedly the Treasure Room, featuring the famous Poule aux poussins d'or, a set of gold coins in a highly refined style, said to have belonged to the Visigoth king Athanaric.

Ne pas manquer bien sûr la salle du Trésor, où est exposé celui de Pietroasa à l'histoire mouvementée (une partie "disparu" en URSS). Mais aussi, parmi les collections néolithiques, le "penseur de Cernavoda" et sa compagne: deux statuettes exceptionnelles de modernité. Ce musée est la meilleure manière de comprendre que la Roumanie a une authentique histoire, très différente de celle de ces voisins slaves, la réplique de la colonne de Trajan étant d'ailleurs là pour rappeler sa latinité.
