The House of Matei Corvin, named after the man who was King of Hungary for thirty-two years, from 1458 to 1490, bears this royal sobriquet, as it is quite simply the sovereign's birthplace. Built in the 15th century, restored in 1944 and listed as a historic monument, its architecture has evolved over the centuries, from Gothic to Renaissance-style additions. Its uses have been many and varied: from inn to prison, hospital and museum. Today, the building belongs to the University of Art.
