SANKT BENDTS KIRKE CHURCH (SANKT BENDTS KIRKE)
Denmark's first royal church contains the tombs of numerous monarchs buried between 1182 and 1341.
Originally built as the church of the Benedictine monastery (which burned down in the 18th century). The first travertine church, completed in 1082, was replaced by the present church, built by Valdemar I the Great between 1163 and 1170. It is the oldest brick church in Scandinavia and the first royal church in Denmark. This explains why it was used as a necropolis and houses the tombs of many monarchs buried from 1182 to 1341.
