EGESKOV CASTLE (EGESKOV SLOT)

Egeskov Castle is one of the great sites of Fiona, because of the beauty of its domain, its original architecture so well maintained and its strategic position in the center of the country. It is very popular (200 000 people per year). It takes about 4 hours to visit the complex. A private residence of which one can visit only a part of the apartments, a third of the castle being occupied by the family, even if new rooms are now open to the public.

Built on several thousand piles made of oak trunks, Egeskov (literally "the oak forest") has undergone major restoration work in recent years (roofs, some rooms of the castle, historic park beds ...). Because of its particular attachment to the ground, it is necessary to maintain the height of the water in the small pond to protect the wood, which could be damaged by the air. This happened for a few hours during the very dry summer of 1992. Completed in 1554 by the owner of the adjacent farmsteads Frands Brockenhuus, the medieval fortress-like castle was almost impregnable in the middle of its moat, accessible only by the drawbridge, with its battlements and machicolations. Today, its turrets and chimneys reflected in the water give it a fairy tale look.
