LADBY VIKING MUSEUM (VIKINGMUSEET LADBY)
Discover Ladby, a tomb with a boat, featuring the remains of an exceptional Viking burial site.
Ladby presents the remains of an exceptional Viking burial site. And for good reason, it is the only tomb with a ship found intact in the ground even though the tomb was looted long before the archaeological excavation. In the year 925, a Viking king was buried here in his 22 m long warship, along with several horses and dogs sacrificed to honor the deceased. It was built for 30 to 32 rowers and was equipped with sails of which nothing remains but 7 water rings, approximately in the middle of the ship along the railing, attest that the ship sailed. The size of the sail is estimated at 60m2. The ship's anchor is also intact.
The grave was found in 1935 with 11 smaller graves. According to Viking rites, slaves or relatives of the deceased were sometimes sacrificed, if the deceased occupied an important social position.
When you enter the mound and as soon as your eyes get used to the darkness, you will see the shape of the nave and the elements of the construction with its 2000 nails. The drakkar is preserved under glass in special conditions of temperature and humidity for its long-term preservation.
Labels explain the parts you see, or don't see for that matter, in order to identify the fragments and understand the history of this tomb. A small museum with an exhibition and reconstructions as well as a store complete the visit.
