CATHEDRAL (DOMKIRKE)
Cathedral with a mix of styles, dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, St. Clement, and featuring a tapered bell tower, paintings and frescoes
Dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, St. Clement, it's easy to spot from afar thanks to its 96 m high bell tower. Rather sober on the outside, it becomes flamboyant on the inside.
Built at the end of the 12th century, the earliest known date is 1191, the year in which Bishop Peter Vognsen was ordained. Originally in Romanesque style (a few remains in the eastern chevet), this harmonious 93 m-long Gothic church was rebuilt between 1449 and 1500. Its architecture is inspired by the Hanseatic League churches built all around the Baltic Sea.
Entirely frescoed before the Reformation, a few fragments dating from 1470-1520 constitute the largest painted ensemble in Denmark (220 m2): St Michael and the Dragon, St Clement, Last Judgment...
Other highlights include numerous donor paintings with elaborate frames (17th century), the Baroque organ, the bronze baptismal font (1481) by the German master Hansen - depicting scenes from the life of Christ - and, on the altar in the choir, the Lübeck Master's triptych (1479).
Finally, don't miss the Resurrection Chapel. Fully decorated in 2023 by artist Peter Brandes, who lived in Paris for over 40 years and was inspired by the stained-glass windows of French cathedrals. Altar table, chalices, altar tops... superb pieces of contemporary goldsmith's art. Look up, a surprise awaits you!
Skt.Clemens Drengekor is the cathedral choir (children aged 6-10 and adults). It gives concerts all year round.
