BISHOP'S CASTLE (MIDDELALDERBORG)
Medieval castle built in 1520 and restored, the most beautiful room on the second floor features fireplaces from the and centuries
After passing through Rødding, follow the road to the beautiful medieval castle of Spottrup, lost in the countryside, nestled not far from the lake of Rødding, in the heart of a beautiful natural and wild area. The entrance to the castle is not on the parking lot (lined with an information office and an excellent and not too expensive inn). You have to go around the ditches on the left to reach a small wooden kiosk that serves as a reception desk where tickets are sold.
In front of you stands an impressive fortress built in the middle of a perfect quadrilateral filled with water, itself surrounded by a large embanked wall, in turn protected by a second line of water ditches. The building was constructed in 1520, 16 years before the Reformation became the state church. The defensive system of the castle is remarkably preserved and restored: a 9-meter high rampart adapted to the enemy's artillery fire, a tower-porch and drawbridge protecting the access to the inner courtyard, thick walls... The most beautiful room, on the second floor, includes a 16th century fireplace built into the thickness of the wall, and a second one dating from the end of the 17th century. Superb 16th century chest. The furniture in the other rooms is more recent, dating mainly from the 18th century.
This castle which belonged to the diocese of Viborg, became royal in 1536 then passed between the hands of several owners before being repurchased in 1937 and renovated by the Danish State.
