CATHEDRAL (DOMKIRKE)
Large neo-Romanesque granite church dating from 1876 with Romanesque crypt, frescoes on 2 sides of nave and choir
The largest granite church in Denmark, rebuilt in 1876 in the neo-Romanesque style on an old Romanesque building (1150) that had been destroyed many times. The interior was entirely decorated by the painter Joakim Skovgaard (1856-1933). The frescoes on both sides of the nave and the choir date from 1901 to 1906 and represent major scenes from theOld and New Testaments. On the ceiling, oil paintings on mahogany illustrate scenes from the life of the Virgin and the Child Jesus, painted between 1911 and 1913. The original Romanesque crypt is preserved.
