TÓRSHAVN CATHEDRAL (HAVNAR KIRKJA)
Whitewood church built in 1788, featuring a remarkable late-Renaissance altarpiece depicting the Last Supper.
It is the white wooden church overlooking the port, at the entrance of Tinganes. Built in 1788, it was rebuilt in 1865. It houses a remarkable altarpiece in late Renaissance style representing the Last Supper. On a panel of the triptych there is a dedication stating that Hans Sevrensen, a former merchant from the Faroe Islands, gave the altarpiece to the church in Torshavn in 1647. The cathedral bell is believed to have come from a Norwegian ship that sank on the evening of 31 December 1707 off the island of Suðuroy.
