KONGAMMINNIÐ
This obelisk, built over the town, commemorates the first visit of a Danish sovereign to the Faroes, King Christian IX.
An obelisk in a small square above the city, built by Jákup Andrias Arge and H.C. Arnbert. It can be reached from the passenger port on Hoyvíksvegur Street. It commemorates the first visit of a Danish ruler to the Faroes, King Christian IX, in 1874, when the archipelago was under Danish flag since 1380. This visit moved the mayor of Tórshavn who would have died in front of the crowd and... the king of Denmark, during his welcome speech. The king, very shocked, financially supported the widow of the mayor for the rest of her life.
