CHURCH OF ST. OLAV (ÓLAVSKIRKJAN)
A medieval church, consecrated in the century and built of ashlar, with a beautiful Lutheran sobriety.
Access is through a portal decorated in coloured glass by Tróndur Patursson. This medieval church, consecrated in the 12th century, was built of ashlar. Following extensive restoration and whitewashing, it now displays a beautiful Lutheran sobriety. Some of the furnishings and precious objects (including a runestone, the Kirkjubøur stone, found in 1832) were sent to the National Museum in Copenhagen. Others (14 finely sculpted bench heads of apostles and saints...) are on display at the new National Museum in Tórshavn. Note the altarpiece, depicting a fishing boat, painted by Sámal Mikines.
