MYKINESHÓLMUR
A bird paradise located on the westernmost part of the archipelago, offering breathtaking views.
What attracts so many people here? First of all, a fabulous landscape. Then, thousands of screaming birds, almost indifferent to the presence of man : they are anyway outnumbered by humans and seem to have no fear ! At the bottom of the village, the boat docked in a small cove in the hollow of a high cliff, with the rock whitened by bird droppings, and which resounds of their multiplied cries! Even in calm weather, you will have to jump by synchronizing the movement of the sea to the pier! Then you have to climb a huge staircase leading to the village. From there, a path leads to the tip of the island, through the meadows, by the sea.
This bird paradise is located on the westernmost part of the archipelago. A legend tells that Mykines was in reality a giant cetacean. A fisherman would have finally succeeded in catching it and finally threw it in the dunghill. The resulting dung heap gave its name to the island since Mykines means "dung heap" in Feringian.
A 2-hour guided tour is possible by booking at Kristianshús. The walk is easy for everyone (even without a guide): the path is marked out up to the lighthouse at the tip of the island and framed by safety barriers in the steepest places. If you turn around, you can see the small village and its bell tower, surrounded by pastures and cows. And one sinks little by little into the kingdom of the birds: the puffins fly in waves and return to their "burrow". The spectacle is breathtaking.Did you know?
