CHURCH (KIRKJA)
Church with attractive black wooden architecture, inaugurated in 1838, set in a bucolic location in Sandur.
A pretty black wooden architecture, covered with lawn on the roof and dominated by a square bell tower, entirely white and topped with a weathervane! The place is bucolic. Surrounded by a low stone wall, the building dates back to the 11th century. Under the present church, inaugurated in 1838, the foundations of the very first church were found: it was made of wood, in the Norwegian style. Since then, five churches have been built successively. Twenty-six graves and 42 coins from the 13th century were found in the layers of the second oldest building.
