COAL MINES (RÓKHAGI)
Coal mines located near the village offer an opportunity for a walk.
Suðuroy is the only Faroese island where coal is mined. The mines date back to the 17th century. They are located around Trongisvágur and Hvalba. Numerous attempts were made to mine coal profitably, but ultimately failed, as British coal was cheaper. Coal was mined solely for domestic use, replacing peat as a fuel.
At Rangabotnur, in the Trongisvágur region, mining began in the late 19th century and was active until the late 1970s. In 1954, these mines supplied around 75% of Faroese households. However, once again, mining was unprofitable and was replaced by oil.
Guided tours are available from the Visit Suðuroy office in Tvøroyri.
