Created in 2006 in order to respond to the growing French-speaking community in Abu Dhabi, the Al Bateen school was only intended to accommodate primary school classes. It is quite natural that the name of Theodore Monod whose friendship with Louis Massignon (a great French academic and Islamologist) was forged in a great orientalism and humanism, was chosen. Inaugurated by Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy, at the time Minister of the Interior and Town and Country Planning, the Lycée Français International Théodore Monod opened its doors in a former Emirati villa. Gradually, the number of students increased and the acquisition of the campus site, opposite the villa, made it possible to separate the students by keeping the TPS and PS in the villa and all the other classes on the campus.
In 2013, the first middle school students were welcomed and the campus site was gradually expanded. In June 2017, the first class of students who passed the Diplôme National du Brevet was celebrated. This is the first step that will lead the students to the baccalaureate in 2020.
Thanks to AFLEC, the Elite Management Group and the diplomatic services, the Lycée Français International Théodore Monod has built a solid foundation for the future of all French speakers in Abu Dhabi. The LFITM's vision also reaches further. In 2016, the school acquired a piece of land on the cultural island of Saadiyat which, since February 2021, has been home to all classes from PS to Terminale in ultra-modern facilities.
In total, the establishment now hosts 1,350 students, from kindergarten to Terminale classes.
LFITM is a partner school of the French Secular Mission (Mlf) and a member of the network of the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE).
Following AFLEC's motto "Three Cultures - Three Languages", LFITM offers to all its students the transmission of French culture and language, an international cultural opening and in particular on the United Arab Emirates and an intensive teaching of English and Arabic from the kindergarten class. Starting in the 5th grade, all students choose an additional language from among Mandarin, Spanish and German.
The latest innovation: Starting in kindergarten, students can follow a bilingual path by joining an American international section.
