QASR AL HOSN
Abu Dhabi Fort, home of the Al Nahyan family and the people, tells the amazing story of Abu Dhabi.
The residence of the rulers of Abu Dhabi until 1972, the "White Fort", the only remaining building from the 18th century, is the oldest structure in the emirate. As if crushed by the dizzying shadow of the surrounding towers, the Qasr remains the immaculate sign of Abu Dhabi's first year. Its modesty works in harmony with Abu Dhabi's founding fathers, Bedouins who came from Liwa to hunt gazelle. It embodies the Dhabi "wisdom" that ultimately paid off Dubai's debts. Moreover, the fort is displayed on the AED 1,000 bill, the highest value in circulation. Under renovation for several years, it reopened in late 2018. This fort is probably where any visit to Abu Dhabi should start. It's rebuilt as if it were identical, made of coral and shells, in a pure and magical white (even though whitewash was not its original color) with its heavy wooden gate at the entrance protected by bronze spikes and two guards on either side of two cannons. The museum is divided into two courtyards: in the first courtyard there are rooms on the history of the country, from the pearling and dating activities to the union. With a series of moving testimonies: small films that give voice to the elders and tell the traditions and important celebrations (wedding, majlis ...), the construction of the fort, the development of the Emirates, the beginnings of oil exploration ... We are moved and understand how some are nostalgic for the life of the fort and its sheikh; a sheikh more protective than authoritarian, more father than dominator and always consulted in disputes, like a wise man. Then around the second courtyard with its palm trees, are arranged on two floors of open rooms that contain evidence of daily life. Do not miss to visit the house of the craftsmen, behind the fort. The crafts of the Emirates are celebrated here: Sadu (weaving of camel, sheep and goat wool), Khoos (weaving of palm branches and leaves), Talli (embroidery of silk and silver thread), coffee making and sea-related crafts. You will be able to discuss with the craftsmen and the explanations are extremely interesting. A small store at the end will allow you to acquire some authentic objects of a beautiful quality. Festivities are proposed and change according to the day of the week: changing of the guard, traditional poetic songs, dances of the sticks. An essential visit!
