TOMB OF MARCEL TREICH-LAPLENE
Erected in 1922, this lonely concrete obelisk monument is dedicated to Côte d'Ivoire's first French colonist, who died at the age of 30
The monument dedicated to Marcel Treich-Laplène, the first French settler in the Ivory Coast, consists of a lonely concrete obelisk, standing dustily in the middle of a small square of yellowed greenery. As lonely and pathetic as the fate of this adventurer who died at barely 30 years old, on a liner in the harbour of Grand-Bassam, gnawed by fevers and exhausted by his treaty races. The monument was erected in 1922 on the tomb of the young Corrézien.
