BENEDICTINE MONASTERY OF SAINT MARY OF BOUAKÉ
A former monastery with a hotel service offering simple, air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms.
The Benedictine monastery of Sainte-Marie de Bouaké is a priory of the Order of Saint Benedict (480-547), the oldest in the Catholic Church (15th century). Its history dates back to 1959, with the arrival in Ivory Coast of three monks from the monastery of Tioumliline in Morocco. Its buildings were built in 1961 by the architect Louis de Haym de Marien. The Benedictines are contemplative monks: vocation, self-giving, meditation and austerity characterize their monastic life. Apart from prayers, they also engage in several activities which enable the community to finance itself: raising laying hens, growing moringa, making jams and honey, but also cooking, laundry, gardening... The products made (eggs, jams, honey, moringa powder and dried leaves...) are on sale in the priory shop (the mango jam... a marvel!). In 2015, the Benedictine monks founded the Sainte-Marie Health & Well-being Association, in which several lay volunteers (doctors, nurses, etc.), particularly committed to the vulnerable populations of the Oliénou district known as "Campement", of all religious persuasions, are active. If you wish to go to the monastery for a simple visit far from the urban bustle, or even, why not, to stay there, it is quite possible, they have a hotel service of sober rooms of course but air-conditioned with private bathroom.
