BIG KORHOGO MARKET
Discover regional products, goods from Ghana and Togo, weavers, jewelers...
Korhogo's position as the crossroads of the city of Korhogo results in an intense commercial activity, materialized by an important market whose activity is permanent. The market days are variable, according to a calendar developed under the era of Samory Touré. A special moment that sees a convergence of all the ethnic groups of the region, when the rural world meets the city dweller for colourful exchanges. The women of the villages, who come to sell the fruits of their hard work to the city, occupy a predominant place. Like any market, the Korhogo market is divided into sectors. In addition to regional products, there are goods from Ghana and Togo, brought in via Burkina Faso. Outside, in the labyrinthine alleys, here the weavers, there the shea butter... But the show is in the large central hall, Ali Baba's cave, where cheap jewellery and the scent of patchouli compete with Indian incense. There are also Napoleons, which the Fulani use to make their headdresses, while the local jewellers make them into various ornaments. Some travelling hairdressers shave their customers with a sure stroke of the blade and, above all, everywhere they are nothing but charms, protective amulets and fetishes to be worn to the marabout: skulls of birds and dried reptiles, snakes and "freeze-dried" lizards too, teeth, horns, ruffled hair, the legs of fowl and other condiments with occult culture broths... Fascinating.
