A remarkable mosque with a large prayer hall, a landmark in Jakarta, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia.
The Mosque, inaugurated by Suharto on February 22, 1978 after the project was launched in 1961, is a landmark in Jakarta. It stands on the remains of a former Dutch fortress. With its 5-storey prayer hall, it holds the title of the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, with a capacity of up to 120,000 worshippers. Its name "Istiqlal" means "independence" in Arabic. Open to non-Muslim visitors, respect for rules of dress and behavior is de rigueur.
