The building itself, which has the appearance of a Greek temple, was inaugurated in 1870 and once housed the High Court of Justice. Today, it houses an impressive collection of paintings by famous Indonesian painters such as Raden Saleh, Affandi, Sudjojono, Dullah and Ida Bagus Made, presented according to the various key periods in the history of Indonesian art. The museum also houses Chinese ceramics and terracotta pieces dating from the Majapahit period.
