TAMAN MINI INDONESIA INDAH
Theme park with several museums, a botanical garden, cable car, aquarium, mosque, Imax theater, etc.
Chances are you'll never visit Indonesia in its entirety. A lifetime would not be enough to discover all the 17,000 islands that make up the archipelago. With this in mind, in 1975 Tien Suharto, wife of President Suharto, created the theme park Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), which means "Beautiful Mini Park of Indonesia". Spread over 150 hectares, the park is designed to reflect the country's different provinces, with reproductions of traditional houses and exhibitions on local traditions, traditional clothing and the archipelago's varied lifestyles. For the entertainment of visitors, often families, the park offers a botanical garden, a cable car, a mini-train and pedal-boat and rowing boat rides on an artificial sea representing Indonesia in miniature. In addition to its cultural exhibitions, the park features 18 museums with eclectic subjects, covering fields as diverse as electricity, insects and stamps. Discover also the mosque, the Buddhist temple, the Catholic church, the Imax theater, the aquarium, the reptile park or the bird park..
Getting there: The park is about 25 km from downtown Jakarta. You can get there by car or cab, which usually takes around 40 minutes. Alternatively, public transport is another option, with a journey time of around an hour and a half.
