As you walk along this nauseating canal, you come across an old Dutch drawbridge, such as you'll find all over the Netherlands. The beautiful Kota station, in the same district, was built in 1929 by the Art Deco architect F.J.L. Ghijsels. A few old Dutch houses remain on the quays along the Kali Besar canal, the city's oldest (17th century). Most of the buildings have fallen into disrepair, but the Toko Merah (Red Store) has been beautifully restored. It was one of the residences of Governor General Van Imhoff (1705-1750).
