KERATON SUROSOWAN
Remains of a remarkable palace, with pools, pavilions and fountains, a site steeped in history in Banten.
Surosowan Palace was once the heart of the flourishing kingdom of Banten. Built in the 16th century, it served as the main residence of Maulana Hasanudin, the first sultan of Banten. The palace, which was also a fortress, originally covered a vast area of over 30,000 square meters. In the 19th century, it was destroyed by the Dutch East India Company. Today, remnants of its glorious past include swimming pools, pavilions and fountains once used by the royal family.
