Fort, built in 1682 by the VOC as a military fortress and residential center, with houses and churches.
This fort, built in 1682 by the VOC, served as both a military fortress and a residential center, with houses and churches within its walls. It was a key element in the power struggles within the Sultanate of Banten, particularly between Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa and his son, Sultan Haji. The latter, in alliance with the VOC, succeeded in gaining control of the region's commercial monopoly in 1683. Following this war, the fort was renamed Speelwijk in honor of Cornelius Speelman, an important VOC official.
