PANGANDARAN NATIONAL PARK
Park to visit in Pangandaran, home to macaques, wild buffalo, gibbons, turtles, tapirs, snakes, lizards, etc.
Pananjung Pangandaran Nature Reserve, which occupies the entire southern part of Pangandaran, lies on a peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow neck of land (approx. 100 m) that divides the beach into East Beach and West Beach. Although very small, this 570-hectare national park is no less pleasant. Around 80% of the park is secondary rainforest. The lush vegetation is splendid: trees, mangroves, flowers... The waterfalls are cool and clear. The park is also home to many animals: wild buffalo, fallow deer, gibbons, turtles, tapirs, snakes, lizards and many beautifully plumaged birds. The most familiar guests, however, are the macaques, in large numbers (be careful with your food, they won't hesitate to ask for your help).
Walkers have two options: the Recreation Park, a loop of around 2h30 that takes you to several caves (including one with porcupines, a sad sight as the hordes of local tourists throw peanuts and plastic cookie wrappers at them...), and the Macaque Park, where you'll find a large number of macaques. Note that you need a flashlight, which you can rent for 15,000 Rp at the park entrance), beaches...
option2: a 4-hour round trip to a lovely waterfall where you can take a dip (crossing buffalo pastures). A guide is superfluous for the first tour, but may be welcome for the second (less obvious path). You can also explore the park by boat: allow 45 min.
