MESJID AGUNG
Mosque built in the century in Cirebon, the oldest in Java, with overlapping roofs, minarets and elaborate decorative motifs.
Next to the Kraton, the Agung Mosque, also known as the Great Mosque, is believed to be the oldest in Java, built in the 16th century. Its superimposed roofs, reminiscent of merus (wooden towers), like those of the Banten mosque, are an example of the many borrowings made by Islam from Hinduism. Other features include domes, minarets, inner courtyards and elaborate decorative motifs. Remember to observe prayer times if you plan to visit.
