KELENTENG SAM POO KONG, GEDUNG BATU
Chinese temple built in memory of Admiral Cheng Ho, located in a cave on the road from Kendal to Semarang.
Chinese temple dedicated to a Muslim eunuch! It is located in a cave on the road to Kendal. It bears witness to the role played by the Chinese in the spread of Islam. The Gedung Batu, or Sam Po Kong temple, was built in memory of Admiral Cheng Ho, a Ming dynasty Chinese dignitary who led several expeditions in 1406 to Java and Southeast Asia. The mix of styles is striking, with Chinese dragons rubbing shoulders with statues of Hindu divinities.
