GEDONG SONGO TEMPLES
Nine Shivaite temples, dating from the and centuries, cling to the side of Gunung Ungaran, at an altitude of 1,000 m, in a superb setting
These temples are about a 30-minute drive south of Semarang. A small resort at an altitude of 980 m, its main attraction is its proximity to the Gedong Songo temples (6 km to be exact). Clinging to the side of Gunung Ungaran, at an altitude of 1,000 m, these nine small Shivaite temples, dating from the 8th and 9th centuries, stand between deep gorges and gentle hills. To the west, Gunung Sumbing can be seen, and to the south, Merapi. Below, the Rawapening lake stretches across hillsides dotted with rice terraces and fallow fields. Not all the temples have been restored: number 5 is undoubtedly the most impressive. A site of exceptional beauty. For the best photos, it's best to come in the morning. Accommodation is available on site (very, very simple hotels at 80,000 Rp). To get to Bandungan, take a direct bus from Semarang. Or by Colt from Ambarawa. To get to the temples, take a bus from Bandungan to Sumawono. Get off at the crossroads to Gedong Songo, then walk 3 km uphill. Or walk the 6 km from Bandungan (beautiful scenery).
It's also possible to take a horseback ride around the temples, costing around 80,000 Rp for one to two hours. Visitors on foot and on horseback follow different routes, so you won't see any horses during your ride. Remember to take some cash with you, as everything here is paid for in cash. In short, magnificent and indescribable, one of the best memories of your trip!
