FORT WILLEM I
A Dutch fortress built during the Diponegoro War, a site steeped in history in the middle of a rice field.
19th-century Dutch fortress built during the Diponegoro War between 1827 and 1830. After the war, it became a strategic military post under the reign of Willem II, playing a key role between the cities of Semarang and Surakarta. Later, in 1927, it was converted into a prison for juvenile and adult delinquents, as well as political prisoners. During the Japanese occupation, the fort was used as an internment camp. Set in the middle of a rice paddy: a striking contrast.
