KOTA GEDE
Ephemeral capital of the kingdom of Mataram, a district with goldsmith's workshops, traditional Javanese houses and more.
The short-lived capital of the Kingdom of Mataram, this small district on the outskirts of Yogya was founded in 1579, even before Yogyakarta. Today, its silversmith workshops are the most famous in Indonesia. You can watch the craftsmen at work in their workshops along Jl Kemasan. Kota Gede is also home to the tomb of Prince Senopati, founder of the Mataram Empire. To visit the site, dress appropriately and bring a small donation. The district is also known for its narrow streets and traditional Javanese houses.
