Mendu temple, with superb Buddha statues and interesting bas-reliefs, and other temples on the Kedu plain.
Numerous other monuments stand on the Kedu plain (on the way back to Yogyakarta):
Candi Pawon (Branjalan), 2 km from Borobudur; Waisak, which commemorates the birth, death and moment when the Bodhisattva attained supreme wisdom to become Buddha is commemorated every year during the full moon between May and June. The ticket can also be used to access Candi Mendut.
Candi Ngawen (15 km, south of Muntilan village, interesting bas-reliefs); only one remains, compared with five in the past. The lion statues in the four corners of the temple are superb.
Candi Canggal (after Muntilan, turn right just after the Chinese cemetery, walk for a few minutes when the road ends). Also known as "Gunung Wukir".
The most interesting site, however, is Candi Mendut (follow the sign on the left as you head back towards Yogya).
Candi Mendut, a Buddhist temple built around 800 by King Indra, was discovered in 1834 and was the first to be restored in 1897. Three superb Buddha statues (one almost 3 meters high) and interesting bas-reliefs. Every day at 7pm, a one-hour group meditation is held at the monastery. Just turn up and ask the monks to join you. You will then be given a booklet of mantras, and will take part in the collective recitation of these mantras. An offering is also appreciated for your participation.
