MANGKUNEGARAN PALACE
Remarkable palace, the largest in Java, with gold ornaments, statuettes and an exhibition of masks.
Built in 1757, this palace is smaller than the one in Surakarta. The Pendopo, Java's largest, forms the centerpiece of the palace. Made up of green columns embellished with gold, it contains three gamelans and 19th-century horse-drawn carriages. Its round ceiling, painted in 1937, depicts the Javanese calendar. The palace contains some very interesting pieces: furniture decorated with silver filigree and enamels, gold ornaments, Indo-Javanese statuettes, jewelry... A grandiose exhibition of masks (topeng) is sometimes open to the public.
