Surabaya's Old Town, a historic district in the heart of the city, with beautiful monuments, temples and more.
Surabaya's Old Town, also known as "Kota Lama", is a historic district in the heart of the city. The most picturesque part of the city, it's a must-see during your visit. This is where General Mallaby was killed on October 29, 1945, near the Jembatan Mehra Bridge. A few vestiges of Dutch colonial architecture remain in the surrounding area. Located between the districts of Genteng and Simokerto, to the north of the city center, the old town tries, but fails, to resemble a district of Amsterdam. The Persero, in Jalan Cendrawasih, is a beautiful monument. To the east of Jembatan Merah lies Chinatown, still home to small warehouses where the bustling traffic of becaks and carts retains an exotic feel. Here you'll find charming street food stalls. South of Jalan Kembang Jepun, a Chinese temple is dedicated to Mazu, the patron saint of sailors. Pasar Pabean is worth a visit for its spices, seafood, perfumes and precious stones. Near the canal, the Taoist temple Kong Co Kong Tik Cun Ong, offers some wayang performances on full-moon evenings. Not far away, the Klenteng Dukuh temple. The Mesjid Sunan Ampel is Surabaya's holiest mosque. Sunan Ampel, one of the nine Songo walis who spread Islam to Java, was buried here. Another highlight of the old town is the Maison de Sampoerna, a former cigarette factory converted into a museum.
