Sumenep, a destination with many historical monuments, beaches, diving spots and other interesting attractions
53 km east of Pamekasan, the centuries-old town of Sumenep is worth a visit for its treasures, including an ancient mosque built in 1787, a palace (kraton) open to the public, and the royal tombs of Asta Tinggi, where the architecture blends Hindu, Chinese and European influences. Sumenep played a key role in Indonesia's history, from the Mongol invasion of Java to the rise of the Majapahit empire, which stretched from Sumatra to West Papua. Its impact is even reflected in Majapahit's royal red and white colors, said to have inspired today's Indonesian flag.
Explore the iconic Slopeng Beach, as well as the shores of Lombang and Kangean, offering unforgettable snorkeling. The C1 hotel, adorned in blue and white hues, offers a charming atmosphere with simple yet spacious and impeccable rooms. Just a 40-minute drive from the city, the Slopeng region offers an exceptional experience: the discovery of superb painted wooden masks called "Topeng Dhalang". An authentic souvenir not to be found in Bali's souvenir stores, but in their place of origin.
In the vicinity of Sumenep, the 126 islands, 44 of which are inhabited, are an invitation to adventure, including Gili Lambak, Gili Genting and Gili Iyang, ideal destinations for memorable getaways. Extending your stay for a night on these islands could add a magical touch to your journey.
