This temple, erected in 1304, was dedicated to King Kertanegara, assassinated in 1292. Singosari was the capital of this powerful kingdom. This king incurred the wrath of Genghis Khan's grandson, Kubilai Khan, for cutting off the ears of his ambassadors, whom he sent away with his negative response tattooed on their foreheads. In the wake of this affront, the Mongols swept through Insulinde. Only the top of the temple is carved. The rest of the building had to be abandoned before completion. The temple statues can be seen at the Leiden Museum in the Netherlands.
