Traditional Manggarai huts, architectural gems that bear witness to the cultural richness of this ethnic group.
Traditional Manggarai huts, known as Mbaru Niang, like those found in the traditional village of Wae Rebo, are true architectural gems. Each of these structures can accommodate up to 8 families, in a well-organized space where walls and roof merge into a single conical shape, made entirely of palm-leaf thatch. These dwellings, straight out of another era, are ingeniously structured into 5 distinct levels, each with a specific function, with a cleverly and creatively designed bamboo ladder at the center, providing easy access to the upper levels.
The Tenda, the first floor, is where daily life takes place, enhanced by sleeping areas arranged around it.
Above, the Lobo Mehe serves as an attic for storing food, belongings and miscellaneous items.
The second floor, the Lobo Lentar, is another intermediate level devoted to agriculture, where seeds are stored in preparation for planting seasons.
On the third floor, the Lempa Rae, is a safety loft that plays a crucial role in preserving food reserves in the event of flooding of the lower levels.
Finally, the fourth floor, the Hekang Kode, is the most sacred level, dedicated to rituals and offerings to the ancestors.
The design and organization of these huts testify to the cultural richness and ingenuity of the Manggarai, offering a fascinating insight into their traditional way of life.
