Also known as the Amazon Monument, the Amazon is one of Cotonou's great new features of recent years. This 30-metre statue, the second largest on the continent after the Monument de la Renaissance Africaine in Dakar, was inaugurated on July 30, 2022 by President Patrice Talon. Located on Boulevard de la Marina, opposite Place de l'Indépendance and the presidential palace, it pays tribute to the Amazons of Dahomey, the 19th-century warrior women. It was created in bronze by Chinese artist Li Xiangqun.
