THE VIRGIN'S CAVE
A small grotto dug into the bottom of a hill, it has become a Marian shrine and is visited by pilgrims every year around August 15
In Dassa-Zoumé, the Grotte de la Vierge is a small cave dug into the bottom of a hill, where the Virgin is said to have appeared. It quickly became a Marian shrine. Every year, around August 15, a pilgrimage draws crowds from all over Benin, and even from neighboring countries in the sub-region. In front of the Arigbo grotto, as it is officially known, a rough-hewn basilica has also been open to worship since 2002. You can only have a look if you're in the area.
