The history of Stockholm begins with its church, where the foundation of the independent kingdom of Sweden is synonymous with its conversion.

Storkyrkan, the cathedral of Stockholm, is the second oldest church in the city. It is located in the medieval heart of the old town, near the Royal Palace. The story goes that in the 13th century, the founder of the city, Birger Jarl, had a wooden chapel built on the highest point of Stadsholmen (now Gamla Stan). The building burned down and a larger church was built on its place, which was inaugurated in 1306. It was enlarged, raised and embellished in the Gothic style during the 15th century and became the "5-nave cathedral". Then, during the Swedish Reformation, the church lost many of its objects, leading to its transition to a Lutheran church in 1527.

The present church is Baroque on the outside but Gothic on the inside. It remains beautiful and impressive, with red brick vaults and lovely woodwork, where you can see the dramatic sculpture of St. George slaying the dragon, carved in 1471 during the victory against the Kingdom of Denmark. The church also contains a copy of the oldest known representation of Stockholm: the Vädersolstavlan painting.

Today, Storkyrkan is at the heart of Swedish religious and political life, hosting the opening ceremony of the parliamentary year every autumn.

The church is also known for its musical culture, attracting some of Sweden's finest organists and choir directors. Concerts are held here every week, and you too can attend.

A voir.
